"A Leaf Worth Living" by Bill Schott

A flattened face
breathes out the oxygen,
which generates new life.

When insects eat,
they find the green flag,
then dine with rare zeal.

At autumn's turn,
the weakened tassel
is pulled to the cruel ground.

Collected rudely
by unhappy rakers,
a pile of unheralded vassals
feed a final, fiery need.
