"I Was Like A Wounded Soldier" by patcelaw

In the very early days of my struggles with manic-depression, I had a couple of times when I had psychotic breaks from reality. There were those who stood strong beside me and they encouraged me and prayed for me. While there were others who did not understand a person with mental illness. I was shunned by those people. I so wanted people to treat me the same as they had treated me before my illness, and it was not happening.

On one occasion I was at my church and there was a chorale singing group from a Bible college. They were singing Wounded Soldier. As I listened to the words of this lovely and touching song I began to cry. Why was I crying you may ask? I was crying because I was like that wounded soldier in the song and those around me were letting me die, instead of doing what the song was saying. In my notes are the words of the song.

At that point I determined that in my own way, I would do my best to help people understand that those who have mental illnesses, need to have the love and understanding from those especially from those in
the community of faith, and to help people rid themselves of the stigma against the mentally ill.

You see those who have these illnesses will often not be able to deal with the lack of understanding from others and will resort to taking their own lives.

I could have been one of those souls, except I had a very loving and understanding pastor, who stood strong by my side. His care and understanding is possibly the reason I am still here today to write and tell my story in this feeble way.

Author Notes
Come let us pour the oil
Come let us bind their hurt
Let's cover them with a blanket of His love
Come let us break the bread
Come let us give them rest
Let's minister to healing to them
Don't let another wounded soldier die

Obeying their orders
They fought on the front lines for our King
Capturing the enemy's stronghold
Weakened from battle
Satan crept in to steal their lives
See all the wounded
Hear all their desperate cries for help
Pleading for shelter and for peace
Our comrades are suffering
Come let us meet them at their need
Don't let a wounded soldier die

Chorus: Don't let a wounded soldier die
