"The Flirt" by shaffer40

They're on the train. He holds a magazine. He gazes up then down again. She returns his fleeting eye contact, offering half a smile but only one.

It's "The New Yorker" he's pretending to read; he's perhaps an executive, on his way home. She envisions them in his tony high-rise apartment, with its spectacular view, toasting their serendipitous meeting.

It's her stop. She senses him behind her, imagines his warm breath on her neck. She's sure they'll speak outside in the station, where she fails to notice a headline on the newsstand, "Third Female Body Uncovered, Police Seek Serial Killer."
