Depression
"Just Shake It Off" by rtobaygo
I’ve dealt with bi-polar depression for the past twenty-two years.  I understood and appreciated the motives of those individuals who tried to help me through these episodes, however, upon hearing the same, well-intentioned, repetitive (at times unsolicited) advice over the years has left me a bit jaded towards such help.  My poem gives one an inkling to the varied advice I’ve received over the years.

Just Shake It Off

It’s all in your head
Just shake it off
You could have cancer
It cannot be as bad as you say

Snap out of it
Think positive thoughts
Play with the puppies
Go for a walk

You know you’re loved
It could always be worse
So, believe in yourself
A smile can’t hurt

Be grateful for what you have
Count your blessings
Prayers will help
Find solace in your faith

Feel it coming
Can’t step aside
Dread the impact turning day into night
It’s power encompassing, overwhelming

Killing one’s joy and happiness
Well-intentioned people try to help
Deep in despair
I wait in dread for the other shoe to drop

You wait for deliverance
Meds may help
Words of heart-felt encouragement
Return of self-worth

The dragon slain
Confidence restored
Sky again blue
You continue life with hope renewed
