A Contest Entry
"Heads" by Sandra Elizabeth Williams

Immediately he got on the bus I smelled an odour. It was overpowering. The others smelled it too and turned their heads to stare at the boy.

I became suspicious when something dripped from the boy's bag and formed a red pool on the floor. I did not have the guts to question him, but hoped someone would.

A man in the seat in front of me asked, "Youngster, what IS that smell? What's that on the floor?"

"Some heads," the boy's voice trailed off. I cringed. He opened his bag. Several heads of garlic and overripe tomatoes fell out.
