The Awdl Sonnet
"Where is the Sun?" by Dolly'sPoems

The chilling cold has crept inside my bones,
and reached my nether zones to freeze within,
and honed its frosted tentacles like stones
to still me like a statue inside skin.

To thaw my chill I need a roaring fire,
as it is my desire to warm my heart,
retire to places where heat is for hire,
so sun can touch my face with its fine art.

Now I’ve arrived, I cannot find the sun?
The cloud has spun its cotton up above,
and shunned its fame for burning everyone,
for wind and rain has drowned out all the love.

But I know that tomorrow sun will shine,
for on this island, beams peak through in time.

Author Notes
This is a bit of fun. In the canaries we have wall to wall sunshine, so when it is dull, windy and raining it is a bit of a shock to everyone.

Artwork by Dolly.

A Sonnet
Shakespeare's sonnets are written predominantly in a meter called iambic pentameter. Each line of the sonnet consists of ten syllables. The syllables are divided into five pairs called iambs or iambic feet. An iamb is a metrical unit made up of one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable. The rhymes scheme is a,b,a,b; c,d,c,d; e,f,e,f, gg.

The Awdl Sonnet
The same format as above but with an additional Awdl included. See below.
Awdl, in Welsh verse, is a long ode written in a complex system of alliteration and internal rhyme, the awdl was, by the 15th century, the vehicle for many outstanding Welsh poems. Assonance is acceptable for the internal rhyming, as long as the sound is maintained.

The extra rhyming complex as follows:

x x x x x x x x x a
x x x x x a x x x b
x a x x x x x x x a
x x x x x x x x x b

x x x x x x x x x c
x x x x x c x x x d
x c x x x x x x x c
x x x x x x x x x d

x x x x x x x x x e
x x x x x e x x x f
x e x x x x x x x e

x x x x x x x x x g
