"Age Discrimination (story)" by Rosemary Everson1

An older lady was sitting, with her hand under her chin, in the break room. She was in such a state of despair. "I just got fired from my job?" she said.

"Stop!  What did you just say? Fired, why?" I asked.

"You tell me," she said. "My boss said I was too slow on the computer. I just wanted to do a good job for him."

The gray haired lady, Freda, got up from her chair and said, "I tolded him, 'Stop the discrimination right now! I don't want to hear another word from you."

"What happened then?" I asked.  "Did you tell him you wanted to do a good job, and that's why you were so slow in getting the  documents finished?"

I could tell she was beside herself. "Isn't there something in the workplace policy about age discrimination? I'm sure that's what it's all about," she said. "Why can't we all be treated equal? Isn't that what Martin Luther King, Jr. was fighting for?"

"Yes, there is such a thing as equal rights.  We must be smarter when it comes to these issues," I replied.

Yes, the lady had every reason to be upset.

Freda turned around and walked out of the break room with tears in her eyes.  Oh, how I wanted to give her some comfort.

Age discrimination in the workplace persists as a serious and pervasive problem. Charges of age discrimination spiked during the Great Recession. It's not easy to win if you file a complaint, but there are ways to bolster your case. Learn about the law that protects you and what you can do if you or someone you know becomes a victim of age discrimination.

There are five kinds of behavior which can happen in the workplace.

1. Older workers are being fired and younger ones are hired.

2. You're reassigned to unpleasant duties.

3. Hearing tacky remarks about your age.

4. You're not getting any raises anymore.

5. Your performance review is bad.

If this kind of behavior happens, then we have lots of problems.

We Must Try to Stop Age Discrimination!

Author Notes
Facts About Age Discrimination. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) protects individuals who are 40 years of age or older from employment discrimination based on age. The ADEA's protections apply to both employees and job applicants. Under the ADEA, it is unlawful to discriminate against a person because...
