Mother and teenager talk
"Can We Talk?" by Patty Palmer

"Why do you look so glum, honey?"

"Nothing really mom. Just down in the dumps, I guess."

"Anything you want to talk about? I'm here if you need me."

"O.K. thanks Mom."

"Okay, Mom, I do have something bothering me that I don't know how to deal with. Just don't freak out or get judgmental, please."

"OK, sweetie, lay it on me! I'm all ears!"

"Well, it's about Dawn. She has a really big problem and she doesn't know what to do and neither do I, so I can't even help by giving suggestions. It's killing me to see her so upset! She's my best friend!"

"I know she's your best friend. So, tell me what's wrong."

"Well, you knew that Dawn and Taylor have been dating for at least ten months now. She confided in me that they've been having sex for the last couple of months. I told her to be careful but she said it was fine. So, I backed off. Monday, she told me that she's pregnant! She doesn't know what to do!"

"How far along is she?"

"She said that she's missed two periods. Mom, I'm scared that she's going to get an abortion! What if she does that? She's afraid to tell her parents. They are gonna kill her!"

"Well, does she know she's pregnant for sure? Did she do a pregnancy test?"

"Yeh, she did like four of them at different times and they all turned positive! She's starting to get sick in the mornings and sometimes at school. She told Taylor last week and he told her that she had to 'get rid' of it.?"

"Well, that's brutal! He does know that it took two of them to make a baby and it's only fair that he helps figure out what to do about it."

"Dawn is scared to death!

"I'm sure she is! What she needs to do is tell her parents now! I know she's afraid. Her parents might get upset at first, but she knows that they love her and they will be by her side through it all. She won't feel so alone then. Tell her if it helps, I can be there when she tells them. At least they can't kill her if I'm there as a witness! Ha! Ha!"

"What can I do to help her?"

"You can be there to listen while she's figuring out what she's going to do. It's the year 2020, there are more options today than there used to be. Does she know what her options are? Abortion isn't the only way out of this. She knows that you're adopted, so maybe she could check that out as a solution too. There's a lot of couples out there who would love to have her baby. If she decides to keep the baby, that's a decision she'll have to work on with her parents. But, whatever she decides, whether you agree with her decision or not. she'll need her best friend's support. Just because you give her support doesn't mean that you condone her decision, just that you believe it's her decision to make."

"Thanks, Mom,"

"You're welcome, sweetie"

"Mom, I just have one more to thing to say"

"Okay, shoot!"

"It's not Dawn who's pregnant, Mom, it's me!"
