"Concentration" by jusylee72

Sarah's tears weren't noticed. Silently, streams of saltwater slipped down her cheeks.

"Don't let them see me," her brained screamed inside her head. Standing stiff, she was in the fifth row for morning roll call.

Hours earlier, she awoke in the night, her sister beside her. The wooden bunks felt frozen, unbearable.

"Move closer, Helen. I need to feel your warmth."

Helen didn't answer. Helen couldn't answer, her body cold. Helen's voice from last night echoed in Sarah's brain.

"Promise me, Sarah. Say it. You must live."

Staring at the guards, defiant yet silent words invaded Sarah's mind.

"I will."
