Growing up in a snapshot
"Lanugo" by Anya Trofimova

When we were much younger my sister and I prayed for girl harvests and decorated our hair, called it holy, and bathed in the lake like twin lauded things. Her wet hair was black and long, and handed down to her by generations of Jewish mothers. When she cut it, her braids lay like dark moon-roses in the bath and I cried, said that her hair cannot breathe underwater. Autumn, her hair grew in again, thicker and undirected, the first fur of animals, and though I was so childishly unsuspecting, her womanhood was already standing with us in every room.

Author Notes
lanugo - the fine, soft hair that covers the body and limbs of a human fetus.

Childhood is that golden-syrupy time in our lives that we struggle to let go of. In this very short story I aim to capture the inevitable (but utterly transformative and often exciting) changes that come with age.
