One day on the battlefield
"The Soldier" by Robert Zimmerman
The tracer rounds that passed above
were all that I could see.
With BOOMS and BANGS and MORTAR ROUNDS
we chased the enemy.

My buddy said, “Are you afraid?”
Warm tears filled both my eyes.
When battle rages on the field,
there is no brave disguise.

I saw the fire. I smelled the smoke.
I sensed a metal taste.
My weapon fired throughout the night.
Iced fear was not erased.

The battle ceased. The guns fell still.
The maelstrom rolled away.
I cleared my mind in stunned distress,
but this was just one day.

What will the battles bring henceforth?
Will peace return some day?
Each soldier knows that War is Hell,
and battles must allay.
