An Awdl Sonnet
"African Penguins" by Dolly'sPoems

In Africa the penguins love the sea,
and they enjoy the freedom in their wings;
the key is not in flight, but swimming free,
their ballet art in water makes them kings;

and raucous romance fills the salty air,
these, birds know to share a kiss or two;
they dare to brawl amongst themselves to pair,
as suitors fight for females in a queue.

The babies slip and slide on slimy rocks,
good job their wet-proof frocks are durable;
the cock allows the young to take some knocks,
they’re quick to master life’s sweet miracle.

These penguins love the warm and tranquil waters,
and raise abundant sons and stealthy daughters.

Author Notes
The African penguin is now prevalent in Southern African waters. Once endangered, they are now protected and there are over 3,000 in the colony after they were introduced 15 years ago. Penguins are friendly and amusing. Although they are flightless, their swimming abilities are skilful and they can reach speeds of 20 kilometres per hour. They feed on anchovies, mackerel, squid, sardines and crustaceans.

A Sonnet
Shakespeare's sonnets are written predominantly in a meter called iambic pentameter. Each line of the sonnet consists of ten syllables. The syllables are divided into five pairs called iambs or iambic feet. An iamb is a metrical unit made up of one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable. The rhymes scheme is a,b,a,b; c,d,c,d; e,f,e,f, gg.

The Awdl Sonnet
The same format as above but with an additional Awdl included. See below.
Awdl, in Welsh verse, is a long ode written in a complex system of alliteration and internal rhyme, the awdl was, by the 15th century, the vehicle for many outstanding Welsh poems. Assonance is acceptable for the internal rhyming, as long as the sound is maintained.

The extra rhyming complex as follows:

x x x x x x x x x a
x x x x x a x x x b
x a x x x x x x x a
x x x x x x x x x b

x x x x x x x x x c
x x x x x c x x x d
x c x x x x x x x c
x x x x x x x x x d

x x x x x x x x x e
x x x x x e x x x f
