 ABOUT
JEFF WATKINS
I love to write flash fiction because it forces me to think about the weight carried by every word. I like to fly fish for the same reason I like flash fiction: it requires concentration, a loss of self: the former in a world I create, and the latter - more...

He is a top ranked author at the #98 position.

A young girl needs love and freedom.
"Gift" by Jeff Watkins

When I was twelve, Aunt Mildred let me run on the beach, so I stretched my legs way out and left footprints in the wet sand. When I stopped to look back, Aunt Mildred waved at me, and I knew that I could go and go. So I chased sea gulls and those little crabs that won't be caught and stroked a starfish, but put her back in the water because she wanted to be free.

A chocolate lab ran in and out the water and up to a man who hugged her and said, "Good girl, good girl."

100 Word Flash Fiction contest entry

Author Notes
I am bothered by the phrase "Approximate Word Count." Is this the count that the committee goes by?

Pays one point and 2 member cents.
